If you’re heading off to The Boot anytime soon, then specifically if you’re going to somewhere like Rome or Milan for the first time, then come check out some handy tips about what you SHOULD eat during your stay.

To help you avoid either eating at the tourist trap restaurants (yes, they do exist) or experiencing a bout of gastrointestinally-related issues, we’ve put together a list of the top ten things you should try in Italy.

1. Pizza

Of course pizza is number one on this list! Ordering a pizza in Italy will be very different from ordering it back home. There’s a vast array of toppings you can choose from and you will have to know what a Margherita pizza is before you order oneback home. Of course there are the basic, traditional types of pizza, but they do have an entire list of pizzas that are not typically found in the U.S. (I recommend the Quattro Stagioni pizza, which is topped with prosciutto, mushrooms, artichokes and olives).

2. Gelato

Gelato is one of the most popular desserts in Italy. Be prepared to break your diet (or at least learn how to eat healthy in Italy) around this dessert, as it has 150 calories per scoop and it’s SO worth it! Most gelaterias will also have sorbet, which has about 100 calories per serving.

3. Wine & Wine Tasting

Italy is a world-renowned wine country and each region of Italy offers its own unique taste experience. I suggest learning how to drink wine like an Italian (that is, starting with red and then moving onto white) if it’s your first time drinking wine in Italy.

4. Tiramisu

If you are a fan of creamy desserts then this is the dessert for you! It can be very rich so make sure you have just one serving and that it’s in a small portion-size cup. In Italy, this dish is usually served in cups or bowls and not on plates.
